Number Is Never Important

Today I randomly checked my GitHub and saw over 4K commits this year. Total surprise. I swear I never aimed for that number...

I do care about numbers like this: body fat, salary, paper count, GPA, books read, endless metrics. That's not wrong. I really believe having a measure helps you improve. But sometimes it turns the journey into a chase. And interestingly, all of these are defined by the outside world, not by my own heart. That brings anxiety, and it steals the joy.
So let me try some indicators from my heart:
- How many promises I actually kept.
- How many times someone helped me and I didn't say thank you.
- How many times I made excuses to put off my work.
- How many times I saw a beautiful girl and was too scared to talk to her.
Funny thing is, I never chased that 4K. It just showed up while I was doing work I liked. Maybe that's how it should be: take care of the numbers from my heart, and the outside ones will follow, or they won't, and that's fine too.
